365 Challenge Block 2 Easy H

As the name implies this is an easy block.  The only change I made in cutting is for B.  I cut my B strips 1 1/2" x 2".  Note:  I cut pieces bigger and trim them down to size after piecing whenever possible.  It's nice to have a bit of fudge room.

Begin piecing the centre strip by sewing B to the top and bottom of A.

Tip:  Make sure that B strip is lined up not only with the top of A but also along the sides.  This will keep your seams nice and straight after they are  sewn.  Press seams to the B pieces.

Measure the centre square.  It should measure 1".

If you have cut B pieces longer, trim the BAB unit making sure that the B pieces measure 1 1/4" from the seams.  Your centre strip should now measure 1 1/2" x 3 1/2".

Sew a C strip to the left and right of the BAB unit. Press seams to C.

Another finished block!

Tip: Some of the pieces in this quilt are going to be getting pretty tiny so now is a good time to try working with headers and footers.   Headers and footers are used to begin and end stitching.  The header anchors top and bobbin threads thus preventing them from bunching up under small pieces.  I use a couple 1 1/2" x 1" rectangles of medium coloured fabric for my headers and footers and do not use them in my quilts they are simply used to anchor the stitches before starting to piece.

Place a header under the presser foot, hold onto the top and bobbin thread, begin stitching and sew to the end of the fabric.  Stop with the needle in the down position just off the edge of the fabric.

Raise the presser foot and snug the next piece you are stitching up to the needle lining up with the edge of the presser foot.  Lower the presser foot and sew the seam stopping with the needle down just off the edge of the fabric.

Raise the presser foot, snug the footer up to the needle,  you can stitch right through the centre.

Sew to the end of the footer stopping with the needle down just off the edge of the fabric.

Trim the linking threads between the header and the patchwork.

Trim the linking threads between the footer and the patchwork.

Align the fabric under the presser foot so it it ready for your next seam.  The footer now becomes the header.

Happy Stitches,
: ) Shelley
