Three Strips
This is the perfect little block to begin your sampler with. You will know right away if your seams are accurate by measuring after sewing and pressing each seam. Establishing your scant 1/4" seam now will help to avoid heartache later when dealing with more seams and smaller pieces.
Tip: When placing fabrics right sides together make sure that the raw edges are lined up exactly as in the pictures above. Notice that piece B doesn't extend beyond piece A and piece A doesn't extend beyond piece B?
Press after stitching and measure the block. Make sure that it is exactly 3 1/2" wide. If it is too small you will need to make your seam narrower. If it is too big you will need to make your seam wider. Make any adjustments to your seam allowance at this time until your block measures 3 1/2" wide.
Note: The photo makes piece B look shorter than C and A but it's actually not : )
Trim to 3 1/2".
Happy Stitches,

After downloading the block for January 1 select your fabrics and cut as instructed.
Note: I cut my strips 1 1/2" x 4" so I can trim to exactly 3 1/2" x 3 1/2"after the block is pieced.
Tip: If you are working with directional prints such as the ones above make sure to cut them all going in the same direction.
Sew C to B. Press seams to C. Check to make sure that your unit measures exactly
2 1/2" wide. Tip: I centre the ruler on top of the unit to measure rather than along the edge of the ruler this way I can be certain that the unit is exactly 2 1/2" wide.
